摘要:This article is part of a doctoral research programme whose main objective is to study the work of the artist Alcides Pereira dos Santos. In general, the small number of descriptions, opinions and analyses made until now about his work all reinforce the idea that his painting results from inherent factors associated with his social class. Such factors include generally observable characteristics such as being poor, not having had access to a formal education in art, and only starting painting as a profession (or at least being totally dedicated to painting) at an advanced age. As a result, most texts about the artist understand his painting solely as an instinctive practice based upon the appearance of what is being seen, thus tending to reproduce an accurate copy of reality. The current article critiques this concept of the artist.
