摘要：Revista Illustrada (1876-1898) and Don Quixote (1894-1903) are periodicals found in Rio de Janeiro in the XIXth Century. Both approached Republic’s first decade, but adopted different positions. The purpose of this article is to find how the first years of Republic were discussed in these two periodicals. Thus, we selected illustrations and opinion articles on Júlio de Castilhos, one of the main leaders of Federalist Revolution in 1893, Rio Grande do Sul. News and images show that the struggle in the South was not distant from political arguments in the Republic’s heart – Rio de Janeiro - , and they were given highlights on its illustrated newspapers. Still, Revolution enabled newspapers to report distinct opinions on the course of Republic and its agents.
