摘要：The urbanization process has generated several problems that affect directly the environmental quality of the cities. The City of João Pessoa, capital of the State of Paraiba, despite it is not a big metropolis, it has passed for a deep change in its urban material. The present work shows the space evolution of the urban area of the City of João Pessoa through the satellite images of middle resolution, in the period that represents the years of 1990 until 2006. In parallel, there was the mapping of the vulnerability of upper aquifers in the county based on the DRASTIC model, which uses hydrogeological factors to determine the index of vulnerability of an aquifer, and the comparison was made between areas of urban sprawl and the vulnerable areas. The obtained results indicate the urgent need of land use arrangement in areas where real state spread is increasing, as it is the case of city coastal areas.
