标题:Consumo de hojas en folívoros facultativos y aves no folívoras: ampliando el conocimiento sobre la dieta de Saltator maximus (Thraupidae) y Elanus leucurus (Accipitridae)
摘要:Folivory is a poorly documented behavior in birds. In this paper we describe in detail folivory in Saltator maximus and
report for the first time this habit in Elanus leucurus. Similar to their congenerics, folivory in S. maximus could be related
to an omnivorous and opportunistic diet, the temporal variation of the most consumed resources and a reduced activity
during periods of leaf consumption. In the case of E. leucurus, this is the first report of such behavior on a raptor. While it
is not clear its origin, folivory may be, as in other birds, a strategy to counter harmful secondary compounds present in
other food sources due to their nutraceutical properties. These records show that the diet of many bird species is far from
completely known, highlighting the importance of reporting this information
