  • 摘要:A hyperbolic surface is characterized by the property, that locally, in the vicinity of each point, it looks like a saddle. So it is definitely not a flat surface. You will only get a very crude approximation, if you try to model it out of flat pieces of cardboard. This dilemma was already noticed centuries earlier, when the first map makers tried to faithfully depict the globe (mathematical sphere) on a flat sheet of paper. Trying to do that introduces distortions that will either make the landmasses near the north and south pole appear larger or the regions near the equator appear smaller than they are relative to land masses elsewhere. In essence we have discovered spherical, flat and hyperbolic geometry.
