摘要:This study uses 16 in-depth interviews of Somali women living in London to establish the extent to which
Female Genital Cutting practices are used to create both a cultural and a gendered identity. The findings of
this study ascertain the concepts of the ¡®I¡¯ and the ¡®other¡¯ within the Somali culture, discussing how the close
social/individual duality affects the bodies of Somali women. The findings of this study show that Somali
women in diaspora have, to varying extents, developed an ¡®identity crisis¡¯ through moving to a western culture
in which they are presented as ¡®mutilated¡¯. The present research provides a deeper understanding of the
practice, and the findings can be used further to provide an explanation of the high prevalence rate of Female
Genital Cutting practices in Somalia.
