摘要:Some of the large villae of Gaul and in particular those situated in the Western provinces are extensive sites with specific and relatively stereotyped architectural plans. As well a developed residential wing, they include individual work buildings of similar size and plan built around a courtyard.
A typology can be developed from the 130 examples or more of these villae with “pavilions”. They can be easily distinguished from the other large sites of the Gaul’s provinces that present more atypical plans as seen with examples shown here. The settlements’ distribution and chronology are the subject of a specific study. Local prototypes dating to before the Roman Conquest indicate that these villae inherit characteristics from the La Tène settlements. The paper concludes with a discussion on the status of these sites and the activities that could have been carried out in the work buildings.
