摘要:The idea of nationalism in news coverage is a phenomenon noted across a variety of disciplines. This study examines how news media in Turkey recontextualise events involving Cyprus in ways that articulate different discourses of nationalism. To do this, a history of Turkey’s role in Cyprus and then relations between the Turkish press, Turkish politics and Cyprus are examined. This is followed by a critical discourse analysis of a selection of news stories recontextualising a recent event in Cyprus from newspapers with different political orientations. It is found that news stories articulate discourses of nationalism in regard to Cyprus in ways which are of benefit to elites with ties to news centres and not necessarily beneficial to solving the Cyprus problem.
