The present paper draws on two children’s and young adult literature books, The Box of Secrets (Record, 2010) (A caixa dos segredos), by Rogério Andrade Barbosa and My Great-great Grandfather was African (DCL, 2009) (Meu tataravô era africano), by Georgina Martins. It presents points of contact and divergence that these books establish when thematizing the African slavery. Reflecting upon the children’s and young adult literature and its reception presupposes bringing to light the dialogue between demands from the editorial market and the school. It also helps unveil to what extent these texts collaborate for the construction of an anti-racist society.
