The paper analyses main causes and consequences of elitization of Serbia Elitization is tightly connected to politicization and criminalization of the Serbian society. Those three general negative processes are considered as crucial not only for its past and present, but for its future as well. By sticking to Olson’s definition of autocracy as ′the most profitable profession′, the author points out to the logic of power and the hierarchy of interests that essentially determine all post-socialist events in Serbia - those during Milošević’s rule, as well as post-October events. After reminding of the fact that today’s Serbian elites have in most parts started to form during socialist time and mostly as ′successful′, not as ′deserving′ it is pointed out to the continuity of their interest-oriented organization and operation (which surely does not exclude their fierce mutual opposition) which is considered to be the main cause of the permanent crisis of the Serbian society, whose end can still not be seen even faintly. In author’s opinion, if the logic of power and interest is to be followed, then the facility of change of ′political formulas′ (Mosca) with which new-old elites in Serbia preserve and enlarge their power, comes as completely ′natural′ and it also becomes fully understandable why they are not prepared to give up on irregular social conditions in which they operate, as long as the costs of preservation of those conditions are fewer than the gain they make possible.
