摘要:Saffron is listed in the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology as an orange-red product of the plant crocus sativus. It is a member of the Iridiceae family which grows best in a mediterranean climate in areas with little rainfall, cold winters and hot summers. It is also described as orange powdered product manufactured from the dried stigmas and part of the style of the saffron crocus. Its flower contains only three stigmas which are handpicked. Between 70 and 80 thousand flowers yield about one pound of saffron filaments, which makes saffron the most costly spice in the world.
