摘要:The research data on vocabulary development of both normally hearing and hearing impaired have showed that there is a strong relationship between reading comprehension and vocabulary development. Furthermore, it is important to develop occupational vocabulary in hearing impaired youths in order for their future occupational success. Balanced Literacy Approach (BLA), thePcombination of skill based instruction and whole language, seemed to be useful and effective for developing that kind of learning environment. In this paper it is aimed to describe how definition giving strategy, one of the direct vocabulary developing strategies, was applied to hearing impaired college students and its impacts on the defining skills of the students. The research Project, designed as action research was implemented to 10 first year Graphic Design students at Anadolu University, the School for the Handicap. Research data, video tape recordings, voice recordings and meeting records of validity committee and test results The cyclical compiled data were analyzed with several analysis techniques during and after the research efforts. Data have regularly been examined by thesis observing committee. According to the research results the definitions varied based on the lesson plans or innovative contributions of both the instructor and the students. The results have showed that the instructions applied based on the Balanced Literacy Instructional Approach seemed to be beneficial for the hearing impaired students’ definition skills. It is implied that this skill indirectly influences the students’ reading comprehension skills as well. The results will be discussed in the light of previous research and literature.
