摘要:The main aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of 'glass ceiling' or under-representation of women in the management of scientific and higher-education institutions such as University of Rijeka, including the analysis of possible causes and mechanisms of discrimination which it is grounded on. In the first part, we briefly register the empirical findings about gender participation in higher positions within the hierarchical structure at the University of Rijeka, which undoubtedly indicate the presence of hidden primary and secondary discrimination. In the second part, we explore possible causes of the 'glass ceiling' effect. In the third part, we consider women’s under-representation in higher positions within the context of the debate about sexual social roles and alleged differences in the male and female nature. Finally, we stress that the phenomenon of 'glass ceiling' or under-representation of women is not only a normative justice issue (ethical and legal) but also a matter of ensuring social and scientific growth.
