摘要：The aim of this study is, on the ground of the presented research on free time of children and young people, to get an insight into proportion of physical activity in their free time. In the study basic concepts of free time are to be explained and recent researches on spending free time of children and young people in Croatia and in the world are to be presented. In the paper basic theses on the importance of physical exercises for human health are stated, i.e. relevant facts of some of the former researches have been presented, proving that physical inactivity results in the development of many diseases of the present time. Sedentary lifestyle is a prerequisite for the development of obesity in children and young people, and obesity is one of the major factors for the occurrence of diseases. Based on the reviewed literature it can be concluded that children and young people spend most of their free time in front of the screens of their television sets or computers and that the proportion of physical activity in their free time is slightly higher in children than in young people; likewise, boys and young men are more physically active in their free time than girls and young girls.
