摘要：The major objective of this scientific paper is to look into the significance and character of the circumstances presently affecting the operation and competitiveness of the port of Rijeka as well as the complete shipping industry within Primorje Gorski kotar County. On the basis of the analysed data, authors have examined the impact of European traffic policy and transportation routes upon the development of key activities within the maritime and commercial industries. Special emphasis has been put upon the interdependence in the development of maritime industry and sea ports within the context of faster and more efficient development of these activities. With particular attention authors have analyzed the impact of national and local self-management policies upon the development of sea ports and maritime industry within the County. Based on the results obtained, there are appropriate national policy measures to be subsequently determined in order to stimulate the development of these key activities within the maritime trade and commerce as a whole. Owing to the features, methodology applied, and results obtained, the new understanding represent good starting points for the development of shipping and transportation industries in the Republic of Croatia.
