摘要:The lawyer's truth is not Truth, but consistency or a consistent expediency. (Henry David Thoreau) In the light of Croatia's accession to the European Union, and especially in 1997, when the Croatian Agency for the Protection of Market Competition started its work, the translation of relevant EU legislation into Croatian became very important. Owing to the fact that the EU competition law is a new field, lawyers and linguists have been encountering terminological problems and inconsistencies. The differences observed when comparing the rulings published by the Agency in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Croatia with the publication of these rulings in the media and also, to a lesser extent, when comparing them with the already existing translations of EU legislation shows that there is a lack of consistency in the use of terms, which somewhat reduces the understanding of legal texts in this field. The authors of this paper give examples when analyzing the above terminological problems and also draw attention to some of the inconsistencies in the use of terms from the competition law, proposing some new equivalents for terms used. It is largely thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration that considerable progress has been achieved in the quality of more recent Croatian translations of EU legislation when compared with earlier translations; however, there is still room for improvement.
