Esta é uma tentativa de reinterpretar a história da ciência a partir do encontro do Velho e do Novo Mundo no século XVI, recorrendo a tradições intelectuais, práticas culturais e atores históricos que têm sido negligenciados. Essas tradições estão presentes nas etnomatemáticas e etnociências das culturas da região. A abordagem baseia-se nos instrumentos teóricos do ciclo do conhecimento e comportamento e da metáfora da bacia, e considera a troca de idéias, os gostos estéticos, a cultura material, e as explicações e interpretações em contextos locais e globais, que tem como conseqüência a geração de novas idéias, práticas e explicações resultantes dos encontros culturais.

This is an attempt to reinterpret history of science, from the encounter of the Old and the New World in the 16th century, looking into intellectual traditions, cultural practices and historical actors that have been neglected. These traditions are present in the ethnomathematics and ethnosciences of the region. The approach is based on the theoretical instruments of the cycle of knowledge and behavior and the basin metaphor, and considers the exchange of ideas, aesthetic tastes, material culture, and the explanations and interpretations in local and global contexts, which have as a consequence the generation of new ideas, practices and explanations which result of the cultural encounters.
