  • 摘要:This work shows the vulnerability of the Amazon forest to the climate system changes and variability, such as the El Niño and Atlantic Oscillation events, as well as to changes in land use, mainly by tropical deforestation, and global climate change due to the increase in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. The GEMBRAMS regional model was used to evaluate the impacts on the hydrological cycle of the Amazon Basin caused by land cover and global climate changes. The results shows a worrying scenario for the Amazon Basin. The changes in the hydrological cycle, the high temperature of the surface and a possible prolonged dry season could lead to a new equilibrium state of the climate-biome system: hotter and drier, including the savannization in parts of Amazon. On the other hand, protected areas have an important role in protection of landscapes and maintenance of ecological processes and environmental services, of which the most valuable is the one resulting from the non-emission of GHG through conservation of forest carbon stocks, or simply REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). In this sense, it is necessary to implement a scientific-technological revolution in the Amazon that establishes techno-productive chains based on biodiversity, from forest communities to centers of advanced technology. This is a major challenge today, one which will be further increased with the integration of the Amazon in South America.
