摘要：The extension and characteristics of cold waves that have affected the South American continent causing numerous life losses, economic damages and interruptions in energy and communications systems are presented. Climatic factors at macro scale level, which were acting together in those days are analyzed, including observed conditions of Southern Oscillation Index, associated to La Niña phenomena; the Pacifical Decadal Oscillation, that explains the predominance of sea surface cold waters, the Atlantic Oscillation Index and the Antarctic Oscillation or Southern Annular Mode, which strengths the anomalous presence of cold air masses on the continent. The spatial analyses based on geographical tracks of air masses support a geographical approach that requires a more integrated regional vision including different countries.
