摘要:This article deals with child raising patterns in Nicaraguan families, and is based on a bibliographical review of the studies conducted during the last decade in the country. Many of them are quick assessments of a local scope with poor urban families, done in order to understand child raising issues and contribute with future social interventions. Other studies are based on surveys conducted at selected urban and rural municipalities; only two cases have a representative sample of a national scope. Interdisciplinary, explicative, and comparative studies of the child raising styles of different socio-cultural groups in the country are still pending. The selected studies show that family life and child raising styles in Nicaragua are ambivalent. On the one hand, family represents the main organization for material and emotional survival, based on reciprocal help established between relatives. On the other hand, it represents an arena for the socialization of power relations and violence that encourages attitudes of domination and submission. The household can become a space of injustice, particularly against women and children, hindering their integral human development. To really confront this problem, laws have to be complemented with actions directed towards changing cultural patterns that are embedded in the collective imaginary.
