  • 摘要:Despite the growing attention for studying international migration processes from a gender perspective, the majority of studies is limited to a description of men’s and women’s migration separately without taking into account their interactions, or to a reflection on the possible empowerment of women through migration. However, the way in which migration transforms families, households and communities is much more complex and asks for a relational focus that is more detailed and thorough. In this article I try to contribute to this theme by analyzing a key aspect of international migration which is the organization of transnational households. In order to be able to apply a gender perspective in the analysis of the organization of transnational households, I employ a theoretical framework called gendered geographies of power, developed by Sarah Mahler and Patricia Pessar. This article is based on a field study of the different strategies used by female (and male) Central-American migrants in Belize City with the objective of ‘getting ahead’. Their stories show how the female migrants try to engage their position as transnational women for the benefit of themselves and their families. Based on their experiences and perspectives, I argue that the global discourse on international migration needs a refinement that takes into account the interaction between men and women and the geometries of power in which migrants are situated.
