摘要：L'image et le film peuvent-ils contribuer à développer la recherche en sociologie et en sciences humaines ? Utilisant depuis 30 ans, avec un spécialiste de l'image, l'observation filmée comme partie intégrante de ses travaux en sociologie du travail et de l'entreprise, l'auteur montre comment l'image et le film constituent des outils d'investigation et de découverte tout autant spécifiques que remarquables. A condition de bien cerner la spécificité du regard qu'ils permettent et de continuellement réfléchir sur les modalités d'utilisation des moyens mis en œuvre à chaque étape du travail : au niveau de la constitution du fonds documentaire d'observations filmées, dans les principes de tournage à choisir et à adopter, dans le travail même de décryptage et d'interprétation ; et jusque dans les formes finales d'écriture. Utilisée de la sorte, l'image animée se révèle être alors pour le chercheur en sciences sociales un incomparable outil de découverte et d'investigation donnant toute sa place au film de recherche dans la galerie des formes documentaires.

Can images and film contribute to the development of research in sociology and the other social sciences ? For the past 30 years, the author has been working closely with a film specialist to develop filmed observation as an integral part of the research process for his studies in the sociology of work and business. In this article, he argues that photos and film constitute tools for the investigation and discovery of social situations that are both specific and powerful, on the condition that the filmmaker clearly defines the specific nature of the observations that film captures. This requires determining the means that should be used at each stage of the process : creating a documentary database of filmed observations ; choosing the cinematographic principles that should apply during the shooting as well as editing and interpretive stages ; determining the ways in which these images will be integrated into the final written product, etc. Under these conditions, moving pictures constitute a unique tool for discovery and investigation, fully justifying their place amongst the panoply of documentary forms available to researchers in the social sciences.
