摘要：The open source Eclipse integrated development environment is presented. The architecture of the Eclipse project is explained. The main brick of the architecture is the extensibility property. The paper explains how to install the product. It describes and shows the basic tools and features of the Eclipse integrated development environment. It traces the steps to be taken in order to extend the functionality of the application using plug-ins. An Eclipse plug-in is created using Apache Log4j distribution. Another plug-in that extends Eclipse鈥檚 graphical interface is developed. This plug-in provides a tree structure of information extracted from configuration files struts-config and tiles-defs. The advantages of using Eclipse integrated development environment are identified and described. A comparison of the product with a commercial one is stated, using few of both products features.
