摘要：This pilot study aims to assess the level of linguistic competencies in English of 22 students attending English I for Tourism. This study stems from the increasing heterogeneity of language skills and language levels of our students; it aims to spur students? self-awareness of their de facto language level and at the same time tries to guide teachers in relation to the skills/fields of language knowledge that should be covered in class. Finally, the study also aims to involve students in their self-assessment. We wish to make salient i) assessment of skills, ii) motivation as an important means of succeeding in learning a foreign language and iii) learner-centred teaching and learners? autonomy. Our methodology is based on the assessment system Dialang. Data collected from tests? overall results were compared with questionnaires? answers which portrayed students? self-perception in relation to their own language skills and levels. Even though the sample was not large enough to be representative, a simple quantitative analysis of results clearly indicates strengths and weaknesses of these language users; additionally, these results seem to point the way to a reliable and valid instrument to council, guide and motivate students for improving their language skills autonomously.
