En este artículo expondremos los efectos que tiene la violencia colectiva de origen político en las creencias básicas sobre el mundo, la sociedad y el sí-mismo a partir de la experiencia guatemalteca. Primero describiremos las características de la violencia de los años 70-90 en Guatemala, luego revisaremos los estudios sobre las dimensiones de creencias básicas y el impacto negativo en ellas de los hechos traumáticos, para luego presentar un estudio cualitativo y otro cuantitativo sobre el efecto de la violencia en mayas guatemaltecos.

This paper describes effects of collective violence. The collective violence of poli­tical origin has effects in the basic be­liefs on the world, the society and the self. From the Guatemalan expe­rience these effects are exposed. The cha­racte­ristics of the violen­ce during the years 70-90 in Guatemala are described, and then is revised the studies on the dimensions of basic beliefs and the negative impact of the traumatic facts. Finally, one quantitative study and other qualitative study on the effect of the violence in Guatemalan Ma­yan are presented.
