En este artículo se analiza el debate de la crisis del Estado del Bienestar, que co­mienza a plantearse desde los años 70. Las nuevas sociedades y democracias están exigiendo y necesitando una reconfigura­ción de la intervención social del Estado. Aunque entre el modelo americano de acción social y el modelo europeo de inter­vención social parece triunfar el primero, todos los intentos de reformulación están marcados por una cierta patología social: el futurismo, actuar so­bre el presente social mediante las ca­racterísticas de un futuro incierto. El fu­turismo como dimen­sión política generalizada está provocando la reconversión de muchas de nuestras instituciones y estilos de vida, y está origi­nando cierta ines­tabilidad de consecuencias imprevisibles. Si el miedo a la libertad fue la preo­cupación de los años 30 y 40, el miedo a la realidad debe ser nuestra preo­cupa­ción de final de siglo.

This paper analyzes the controversy of the Welfare State crisis, which began to emer­ge during the 70s. The new societies and democracies are demanding and re­quiring a rebuilding of the social inter­vention of the state. Although the Ame­rican model of social action seems to triumph over the European model of so­cial intervention, all efforts at reformulation point to one social pathology: the futurism, to act on the social present by means of the characteris­tics of an uncer­tain future. Futurism as a generalized political dimension is stimula­ting the reconstruction of many of our institutions and life styles, and it is creating a certain instability of unpredictable conse­quences. If the escape from freedom was the concern of the 30s and 40s, escape from reality should be our concern at the century's end.
