摘要:In 1924, the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) announced that any tennis player who was paid to write newspaper articles would be stripped of his or her amateur status. The top-ranked player in the United States, Bill Tilden, announced that he would give up tennis rather than stop writing newspaper articles. Tilden’s actions and the accompanying public outcry forced the USLTA to revise its policy to accommodate Tilden’s position. A revised interpretation of the amateur rule was approved at the USLTA annual meeting the next year
