摘要:This research aims to analyze historically the conception of the body in rhythmic gymnastics in Brazil accessing the representations contained in books and handbooks that deal with this modality throughout its development in the country. The conception of the body in rhythmic gymnastics came not unlinked from the changes in the history of Brazil, in general, and followed the values in the history of physical education in Brazil. It is believed that, because of the values present in physical education in Brazil (militarism, eugenics, hygienism and positivism), there was a favorable space for the development of rhythmic gymnastics in the country. It was noticed that rhythmic gymnastics contains a three-dimensional concept: the female body is regarded as an object of discipline, being dichotomized, but preserving, because of other values in the sport (art, aesthetics, beauty, grace, harmony), his dual unit. Thus, there are three faces involved in this conception of body: disciplined body, dual body and female body. In addition to these found faces, which are intertwined with the historical context of the Brazilian period of handbooks analyzed, the rhythmic gymnastics contains a singular element, that differentiates it from other modalities, currently classified as sports. The graciousness of the female body is a principle determined by the goal of rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics, for practitioners, for to who is watching as well, from its beginning until the present day as a high performance sport, preserves the principle of "the spirit of grace."
