摘要：This paper aims to discuss some elements related to the breaking of taboos and the breakdown of patriarchal tradition and family present in the novel To the Left of the Father (1975), by the Brazilian writer Raduan Nassar. Thus, when addressing the issue of love between two brothers (crime of incest), murder of the father (crime of parricide), and the departure and return of the prodigal son, André (the narrator), the author aims to list the possibility of dismantling of sacred discourse in order to establish the profane in the family, since the narrative works with the reactualization and the dialogue between the religious doctrines of the Middle East (Judaism- Christianity-Islam) through Quranic and biblical inferences. Moreover, the reveal of the heart of the profane, the concepts of tradition and taboo will be conducted thanks to the concepts of Freud (1971) and Eliade (2001), besides the ideas of Fredrich Nietzche.
