摘要:In Anthony Burgess’ remarkable novel, A Clockwork Orange,1 it is not altogether clear who is to be regarded as the principal villain of the piece. Is it Alex, the teenage thug? Or, is it Dr Brodsky who pioneers the use of Ludovico’s Technique (a programme of aversion therapy) at the State Institute for the Reclamation of Criminal Types? The chaplain has little doubt that it is the latter who represents the real danger to society. Observing the successful results of Alex’s treatment, the chaplain laments:
