摘要:This paper belongs to social history, which hasn't been much dealt with by Croatian sociologists. Giving the survey of social and cultural identity of inhabitants of Šolta, the author tries in the first place to give the answer to the question do the people born on Šolta recognize and consider it in their everyday life as a >>Culture system« (the way of living), and then he states the main components of the traditional society and the eve1yday life of Šolta in such a society. The present paper represents a subject-matter and methodological novelty in author's work and sheds a completely new light on his work: the scientist who has whole his life been involved in modern society issues presents himself as an excellent analyst of traditional society. The paper is even more interesting and relevant as the issue of knowing socio-cultural roots and awaking the interest for them among the young generation is ve1y clifficult task since the roots of Šolta are competing with the American pop-culture and it is very hard to get relevant information on what Šolta used to look like (a hundred years ago). In his work Županov retroactively applied the same method the Western social anthropologists used in their researches of the so-called ••primitive tribes« of the Pacific islands. The difference in their procedures is in the fact they came to the island, lived there the same way the natives did and participated in their rituals and other activities, they made notes of their observations and after having returned to their respective universities, they analysed the elata collected by means of theoretical analytic instruments of their profession. Unlike them, Županov was born on the island of Šolta, he !earned the local idiom, participated in various activities on the island and then processed the data collected in sociological software. The author's remarks on family co-operatives on Croatian islands and on the mainland, the traditional society survey by means of six concentric circles (in case of Šolta these circles would be the following: an individual, his/ her biological family, his/ her broader family - before its decay, the local community, i.e. the village organized as fraternity, the Commune of Split and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy) identifying the mechanisms of social integration and the Catholic Church as the basic integration structure, make this work even more interesting. Detailed analysis of the (sub)culture of Šolta, in the first place its normative system, which was published in 1990 in the miscellany-monograph Šolta, makes the second part of this work.
