摘要:While rural America has been considered an ideal setting for raising families, in reality, it is filled with failing concerns in mental health issues. Concerns include poor communications, a diverse diversity, limited employment opportunities and insufficient services. “Very little information is available on how to better understand the health, mental health, and human service needs of Hispanics/Latinos in rural communities” (Soto, 2000, p. 1). According the 2006 National Alliance on Mental Illness report, Texas received a C. However, in 2009, they dropped the grade to D. This grading shows that if continued research and training of community leaders is a state priority the needs of minorities can be substantially met. The Surgeon General stated “the future of mental health of America as a whole will be enhanced substantially by improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities” (U.S. Department Health and Human Services, 2001). This article explores the mental health resource needs of Latino/Hispanics in rural south Texas.
