摘要：O Tempo e o Vento, trilogia do escritor gaúcho Érico Veríssimo, compreende 200 anos da história do Rio Grande do Sul e do Brasil. Através da saga da família Terra Cambará, essa história é vivida e contada. Santa Fé, que de pequeno povoado, transforma-se em cidade moderna, é o espaçopersonagem da narrativa. Personagem, e não apenas cenário, devido a sua importância para a percepção da passagem do tempo. Como microcosmo do Rio Grande, do Brasil, Santa Fé tem sua construção, colonização, modernização e incipiente industrialização descritas e acompanhadas com grande proximidade. Em meio às transformações, à passagem das gerações, um elemento permanece à vista e constante: é a figueira grande, disposta estrategicamente no centro da praça. Personagem presente desde a fundação do povoado, pela sombra da figueira circulam representantes de cada geração da família Terra Cambará, os quais, sob ela, encontram a proteção que somente sua atemporalidade, perenidade e simbologia podem propiciar. A figueira, portanto, testemunha o desenvolvimento de Santa Fé, sendo dessa uma espécie de símbolo.

It is through the journey of the family Terra Cambará that this history is counted and lived. Santa Fé, that of small town is changedded into modern city, is the space-personage of the narrative. Personage, and not only scene, which had its importance for the perception of the passage of the time. As microcosm of the Rio Grande, of Brazil, Fé Saint has its construction, colonization, modernization and incipient industrialization described and folloied with proximity. In way to the transformations, to the passage of generations, an element remains present, constant and immovable: it is the great fig tree, disposed strategically in the center of the square. Present personage since the foundation of the town, for the shade of the fig tree circulates representatives of each generation of the family Terra Cambará, that under it finds the protection that only its atemporalidade, perennial and symbology can propitiate. The fig tree, therefore, testifies the development of Santa Fé, being of this a species of symbol.
