This article analyses the significance of the setting-up of Tismaneanu Committee for Analysing the Communist Period in an international as well as an historical context. Tismaneanu Committee was the fist ever presidential committee set-up within Eastern Europe to investigate crimes committed by communism, the only one precedent being the parliamentary committee of the German Parliament. If one compare it with similar bodies Romanian committee is different in two respects: bigger number of members and the fact that the composition was established by the leader of the committee rather than being established by its initiator.
