  • 摘要:Economic growth may be described with the language of economics, but it can also be described in physical terms. Thus, the position of a country may be represented in terms of Energy use (of different sources) per person/year, Material Flows (biomass, fossil fuels, other materials) in tons/person/year, also in terms of the Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production, and the use of water (including the “virtual water”). Such description of the social metabolism is needed in order to understand the ecological distribution conflicts that arise. The links between metabolic profiles of countries (and regions) and ecological distribution conflicts will be traced. In such conflicts, different languages of valuation are used. Here, use of the language of indigenous territorial rights will be discussed, in a context of pluralism of values. The defense of indigenous groups against oil extraction, mining, large dams or logging, and the movements for environmental justice insofar as they fight against “environmental racism,” could be seen as manifestations of identity politics. However, it will be argued that it is rather the other way around, identity being one idiom in which ecological conflicts are expressed.
