摘要:Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory is a cognitive approach to pragmatics that envisages inference as the central element responsible for bridging the gap between encoded meaning and utterance interpretation within a context. The present study attempts to suggest the applicability of the Relevance theoretical framework for analyzing and interpreting Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite. Findings seem to corroborate that Relevance Theory is an insightful pragmatic resource for recovering an author’s intentions, offering plausible explanations of how communicative meaning is mentally processed by the viewers. Implications of the findings are also proposed.
