摘要:This paper engages in a critical reading of subjectivity as portrayed in Mindscan, a contemporary science fiction novel by Robert J. Sawyer. The reading is concerned with investigating a futurist portrayal of human subjectivity as it interfaces with technological advancements. “Subjectivity” is used interchangeably with “identity” and “the sense of self” which denote human social constructs and consciousness. The concepts represent humanity negotiating its existence with ideology, embodiment and agency. Assuming that the mind and body are two entities, the analysis looks at how and why the mind/body, specified as the primary site for human subjectivity as encapsulated in Cartesian dualism, is changed or altered as a result of the interfacings with technologies. By envisioning the shape of future subjectivity as delineated in the novel, this paper provides an insight into our human selves and our impending posthuman condition.
