摘要：The essay takes its point of departure with the virtual reality box developed by neurologist Vilayanur Rama chandran, in which a mirror is placed in front of a patient with phantom limb pain in an amputated hand in such a way that the reflection of the motor actions of the intact other hand is projected onto the spot where the phantom hand is felt. The aim of the apparatus is to visually re-erect the phantom in order to produce intersen- sory effects. One of the results is the appearance of a kinaesthetic sensation in the phantom hand in 60% of the cases. The visual modality mediates here between two bodily sensations – the original kinaesthetic sensation in the intact hand and the quasi-kinaesthetic one in the phantom hand. What is important is the localisation of the sensation, which is only achieved through the mirror image and the visual sensorium. When the patient sees where the phantom hand is located and if he can make a connection to the actually moving hand, then an intermodal congruency can be established between the projected and the felt phantom hand. This congruency often relieves the phantom pain. These experiments provide interesting points of discussion for the pheno- menology of embodiment and body memory. Due to the mirror a synaesthetic system emerges, in which the body, by way of intermodal mediation, remembers itself and by which a congruency of different aspects of body memory is created. The aim of this essay is to bring together the subjective experience of patients with phantom limbs with the neuroscientific interpretations of the underlying neuronal mechanisms as well as the phenomenological concepts of body image, body schema and body memory. It is argued that a phantom can be understood as a paradoxical experiential unit consisting of a body-imagistic forgetting on the one hand, and a body-schematic remembering on the other.
