The environmental attributes of eco-labeled products confront an "assurance problem". After defining a general framework, we show that choosing a selectivity goal can strengthen or attenuate this assurance problem. This choice requires a difficult tradeoff between the expected development for the eco-label and the efficiency of environmental product differentiation.
