摘要：Communication skill is an essential part of any profession. A person must have command over language to convince the variety of people in personal and professional life. Otherwise, in spite of having intense knowledge of the subjects, one cannot communicate or convey the message or information properly to the receiver. Presently, in the age of globalization and information technology, English is drawing attention to itself as a language worth learning for the abundant opportunities it provides for the individual growth and development. But in rural areas in India, English is still taught from 5th or 6th standard onwards as the second or third language and the students are neither made aware of importance of English nor trained properly to have command over the language. It is a bitter fact that teaching of English in India is still to a great extent, examination-oriented only. Therefore, the vernacular medium students suffer from a syndrome that does not allow them to perform well in higher education courses. They draw a boundary around themselves that does not permit them to exercise their talent in the process of learning English language and other subjects. At the moment, it is the duty of teachers to cater to the practical needs of the learners, to make them competent enough to interact with one another and remove the fear from the minds of the students by providing them moral support more as a facilitator rather than a traditional type of instructor. The students particularly from vernacular languages who take admission in higher education courses should be trained properly in four skills of English - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Reading club, Dialogue chains, Role Play, Book Review, Group Discussion etc. may be very helpful in improving their communication skill and create confidence in them
