  • 摘要:During June and July 2011 Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb continued systematic archaeological exploration of the settlement of the Starčevo culture located at Galovo, north-east from Slavonski Brod. These works were the continuation of the excavations in the area of the settlement which is situated on land south of the ritual-burial area that was first discovered during the 1997 excavations. Studies have shown that the burial area extends further to the south, which is confirmed by the discovery of another burial pit. In the central part of the burial pit the remains of a human skeleton in a cramped position were found, surrounded with numerous vessels, including painted footed bowls. A large lump of ochre was found just above the skeleton’s leg bone. The skeleton was covered with soil mixed with fragments of pottery, numerous nuclei and various stone implements. The following ceramic items were found lying by the deceased: parts of clay weights, discs - the slingshot projectiles, parts of jewellery - drilled bead, 4 discs with a hole, the foot of an altar, the protome from an altar and a clay idol. This burial pit, by its shape, dimensions, a single burial and grave goods, is very reminiscent of the burial pit 15, discovered in 1997, where a chieftain or a shaman of the tribe was buried. Coal analysis by 14C method showed that this burial pit belongs to the middle phase of the settlement at Galovo which is dated to around 5700 BC.
