摘要：En este artículo abordo la colección de refranes incluida por el gramático inglés James Howell en su Lexicon Tetraglotton, publicado en 1660. En primer lugar, describo brevemente la estructura del diccionario y las ideas lingüísticas expresadas en los prolegómenos. En segundo lugar, trato los refranes recogidos en cada lengua antes de centrarme en el español. En tercer lugar, comento el concepto de refrán de Howell y las diferentes estrategias que emplea para traducirlos, así como las posibles fuentes de su obra, sin olvidar el contenido cultural. Por último, intento situar a Howell en su contexto, entre otros gramáticos y lexicógrafos de la Inglaterra de los siglos XVI y XVII.
其他摘要：In this paper I approach the collection of proverbs included by the British grammarian James Howell in his Lexicon Tetraglotton, published in 1660. Firstly, I briefly describe the structure of the dictionary and the linguistic ideas expressed in the prolegomena. Secondly, I deal with the proverbs gathered in each language before I focus on the Spanish. Thirdly, I comment on Howell’s concept of proverb and on different strategies he adopted to translate them, as well as on the possible sources for his work, without forgetting the cultural contents. Lastly, I try to locate Howell in his context among other grammarians and lexicographers of 16th and 17th century England.
