摘要:The main goal of this study was to evaluate adverse prognostic factors, which could contribute to intractable epilepsy, determine the type of seizures, presence of organic brain lesion and effects of antiepileptic therapy. The study group consisted of 25 patients with intractable epilepsy (15 male and 10 female). The patients were followed for two years. Detailed neurological and physical examination was done including EEG, CT and MR. The patients were divided according to the type of seizures, frequency of seizures, EEG and MR findings. Compliance and non-compliance of AE therapy were analysed. Generalized seizures were observed in 10 (40%) patients, the focal type with secondary generalization in 6 (24%), and complex partial seizures were registered in 19 (76%) cases. MR findings were as follows: hypocampal sclerosis in 6 (24%) patients, enlarged lateral ventricle in 5 (20%), ischemic brain lesion in 4 (16%), porencephalic cysts in 2 (8%), cortical atrophy in 2 (8%), and hypocampal atrophy in 1 patient (4%). MR findings were normal in 4 (16%) patients. EEG specific changes were registered in 11 (44%) patients, nonspecific EEG changes in 4 (16%), and normal EEG in 10 (40%). The concept of intractable epilepsy has to take into account not only the frequency of seizures. In patients with seizures resistant to treatment, the compliance and effects of antiepileptics should be considered as well
