摘要:Cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) belong to the group of leading chronic noncontiguous mass diseases. The ischemic type accounts for about 80% of all cases. One of important causes of ischemic CVD is carotid occlusive disease. Primary prevention of the disease includes measures for prevention and elimination of known risk factors for its development. Our study comprised 100 patients with carotid occlusive disease and ischemic CVD. Following clinical diagnostic examination, the main inclusion criteria were positive CT and carotid artery ultrasound findings. Data on the presence of risk factors were collected from all patients. Our results showed that smoking and hypertension were the most common risk factors; smoking and alcohol consumption were significantly more frequent in men, while hypertension was more frequent in women. Coexistence of two and more risk factors in one patient was common in our study. In conclusion, adequate prevention, i.e. quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption and treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity and diabetes would significantly decrease the prevalence of carotid disease and ischemic CVD
