摘要:Doppler ultrasonography is a non-invasive method that has proved irreplaceable in the assessment of functional hemodynamic changes in carotid arteries. The aim of the study was to analyze ultrasonographic findings in ischemic stroke patients with occlusive lesions in extracranial carotid arteries and to point out the correlation between Doppler, clinical and angiographic findings. The study comprised 85 patients with extracranial occlusion, high-grade stenosis and stenosis of the carotid artery. Obtained Doppler, clinical and other imaging findings were discussed and analyzed with respect to their correlation. The specificity and sensitivity of the method was determined. The results of the study show carotid atherosclerosis to be considerably more frequent in male patients, the highest prevalence being between ages 50 and 69. Atherosclerotic occlusion, high -grade stenosis and stenosis were most frequent in the left carotid. A high percen t of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerotic disease was registered. The largest number of ischemic lesions were localized in the area supplied by the middle cerebral artery. The correlation between specific changes on Doppler findings and varying degree of carotid atherosclerotic changes was confirmed, as well as the possibilities of the method to detect preophtalmic carotid artery high-grade stenosis and occlusion and of the spectral analysis to determine less severe disease. A high degree of correlati on between the Doppler method and angiography was determined, which speaks in favour of high reliability of this method in detection of occlusive carotid disease
