摘要：The prevalence of extracranial carodit dissection in the general population is often underestimated due to asymptomatic forms of the disease and the fact that many cases go unrecognised. Only recently have the real dimensions of the disease become recognised. Today it is estimated that extracranial dissection accounts for 1-4% of all cases of focal brain ischemia. Its clinical picture varies and the manifestations range from mild cerebral dysfunction and/or lesions to brain infarction. When an extracranial dissection is suspected, brain CT examination is followed by thorough ultrasonographic and angiographic evaluation. The paper presents two cases: a female patient with spontaneous bilateral dissection of the internal carotid artery and a patient with unilateral lesion of lower cranial nerves (IX-XII) caused by spontaneous dissection of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery
