摘要:Epilepsy is the most common neurologic disorder in adolescence, with a prevalence of approximately 1%. Although 70% of childhood epilepsies go through remission in adolescence, a great number of generalized epilepsies begin in this period. The photosensitivity phenomenon is the most common in this period. Sleep deprivation, use of alcohol, visual stimuli, and abuse of drugs with convulsive effects are common seizure-provoking factors at this age. The choice of antiepileptic medication depends not only on the targeted type of epilepsy and epileptic syndrome, but also on specific adverse effects of the medication and its age-specific pharmacokinetic characteristics. One of the most important reasons for treatment failure in this population is patient's failing to comply with the treatment. Most authors stress the need to establish adolescent epilepsy clinics or centres, where multidisciplinary teams would manage age-specific problems of adolescents with epilepsy
