摘要:The hypothesis about the association between left hemispheric strokes and poststroke depression has been the subject of research ever since it was first suggested, more than 25 years ago. While some studies have confirmed a relation between left hemispheric lesions and depression and others suggested that depression is associated with the right hemisphere, in some studies no significant association between the lesion location and the frequency or severity of poststroke depression has been observed. Recent attempts to systematically review the studies investigating lesion location and poststroke depression have yielded controversial results; some do not support the hypothesis that the risk of poststroke depression is affected by the location of the brain lesion, while others have found a significantly greater frequency of major depression within the first 2 months poststroke associated with the left frontal or the left basal ganglia lesions compared to any other lesion location. These discrepant findings reflect the significant methodological differences in previous studies. Future research should aim at increasing the uniformity of methodological criteria before it is possible to compare the results and determine the significance of lesion location as a risk factor for poststroke depression
