摘要:Despite many research efforts, the etiopathogenesis of poststroke depression (PSD) is still unclear. There are two opposed theories in the literature and substantial evidence has been presented in support of both. According to the primary biological mechanism theory, depression is a result of a specific ischemic lesion that directly affects the neuronal circuits involved in the mood regulation. On the other hand, the psychosocial mechanism theory presupposes that the primary cause of depression involves the psychological and social stressors associated with stroke. It has also been argued that biological mechanisms are more important in the early-onset PSD, while psychosocial factors contribute more to the development of late-onset PSD, due to the individual's failure to adjust to the consequences of stroke. However, a multifactorial origin of PSD is nowadays increasingly acknowledged, which is in k eeping with the bio-psycho-social model of the development of mental disorders in general. In conclusion, clarifying the etiopathogenesis of PSD is clinically relevant for the adequate management and prevention of PSD
