摘要:Introduction: Adolescence is a period of significant physical, emotional and intellectual changes. In this period, adolescent females, often preoccupied with physical appearance, express discontent with their figure, body weight and want to lose weight. Although most of the attitudes and behaviors related to losing weight are benign, their presence may bring important psychological and medical risks. Objective: Our objective was to inquire into eating attitudes among adolescent females in Banja Luka. Method: The sample comprised 16-year-old adolescent females in the first grade of two secondary schools (grammar school and catering school) in Banja Luka. The questionnaire used consisted of 16 questions that measured eating disorders, and was designed by the authors of the article. The questionnaire was answered by 311 out of total 345 girls in the first grade of the two schools (90.1%). Data was statistically processed using the statistical software EpiInfo 2002, with statistical significance of 0.05. Results were presented in tables and charts. Results: Body Mass Index (BMI) below 18.5 was recorded in 11.6% of respondents. More than half wanted to be thinner. In order to avoid gaining weight, 48.2% of all respondents exercised sometimes, 17.4% exercised frequently while 20% occasionally or regularly went on a slimming diet. About 48% of all respondents were sometimes or often terrified about being overweight, while about 60% sometimes or often lost weight. About two thirds of respondents were occasionally or frequently dissatisfied with their figures. Significantly higher numbers of respondents in both schools could not control their eating (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a high level of dissatisfaction and concerns about physical appearance among adolescent females. Less than one third of adolescent females find themselves either too thin or obese, while more than one half have fears of gaining weight. Discussion: This research indicates necessity of educating adolescents in order to help them adopt healthy eating behavior and a healthy lifestyle as early as possible in life, and suggests the need to develop appropriate preventive programs
